Bush Seepweed

Bush Seepweed is an evergreen perennial herbaceous plant, spreading 3-5 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide. Its succulent, pointed leaves are highly variable in color depending on stress–from pale green to silvery grey, or sandy tan to deep magenta. Cream colored flowers poke open in May.

Native to saline and alkaline flats, coastal salt marsh, and scrublands of much of western North America. In CA, Bush Seepweed is found in the interior lowlands in sandy, rocky soil with subterranean water. Also called Mojave Seablite, this species needs summer moisture to thrive. It’s a unique species for the garden, best in a rock garden or a container where it can be watered regularly.
