Warrior’s Plume

Warrior’s plume is a perennial herbaceous plant, reaching up to two feet tall and <1 ft wide. Short, stout, somewhat fernlike foliage support a deep red bloom in late winter. Native to the coast ranges and Sierra foothills of CA and southern OR, Warrior’s plume’s native habitat is dry slopes of forest and chaparral ecosystems.

A hemiparasite, Warrior’s plume can survive on its own, but will parasitize if given the opportunity, stealing nutrients and water from its host. Typically found growing at the base of manzanitas or other members of the heath family.

Ecological Value	Host to three species of butterflies and moths, including the Variegated Checkerspot, Edith's Checkerspot, and Geranium Plume Moth. Pollinated by bumblebees and hummingbirds.
Ethnobotanical Uses	Indigenous people of Mendocino county (likely Pomo) children would suck the "honey" out of the flowers, and said that yellowhanmmer birds drank the nectar as well.
Distribution	Native to California and southern Oregon, foundin forests and woodlands at low elevations. In CA, occurs along the coast ranges and Sierra foothills.
