California licorice root

A sturdy, herbaceous perennial, California Licorice root has delicate, lacy bright green foliage that hugs the ground. In summer, airy umbels of white blooms reaching 2-4 feet tall float above its foliage.

Native to northern CA and OR’s woodlands and chaparral, Licorice root is also often found on serpentine soils. As with many members of the carrot family, Licorice root supports Anise and other Swallowtail butterflies, and is frequently visited by native bees and hover flies. In the garden, best used in shaded, woodland gardens. Pairs well with Pacific bleeding heart, Fringe Cups, and Heuchera.
