Coast Rush
Coast Rush is a perennial grasslike plant, reaching up to four feet tall and wide. Native to the West coast of North America. Found in wetland and riparian habitats, this rush grows well in standing water, and can tolerate saline soils. Deep green foliage sports pale green blooms which give way to deep brown seed heads. Larval host to three species of moths, and provides nesting material for waterfowl.
In the garden, Coast Rush makes a lovely structural backdrop to a meadow planting, dry creekbed, or bioswale, or can provide great texture beside a birdbath or drainage. Pair with other moisture-loving species like Columbine, Cardinal Monkeyflower, or native rushes and sedges.
