Sidalcea malviflora

An herbaceous perennial that grows 2 – 4 feet tall.

Without summer water they will go dormant and reappear with fall rains.

Does well in grassy areas or in borders. Combine with blue-eyed-grass, seaside daisy and native bunchgrasses.

Large delicate showy pink flowers in the early summer.

Ecological Value

Preferred larval plant for the West Coast Lady butterfly.

Historical Uses

Sidalcea malvaflora leaves were baked and eaten by the Coast Miwok in Sonoma and Marin Counties. The parched seeds were pounded and eaten as pinole (seed flour)

native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America.
