Suisun Marsh aster grows in brackish or freshwater marshes and along the banks of sloughs and watercourses.

It is a federal Species of Concern and is endemic to Suisun Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin river delta. Current threats to this species include invasive plants, erosion, creek channelizing, levee construction, and feral pigs.
